MediaFile is excited to announce that Julia Arciga will be the next Editor-in-Chief of MediaFile and Talia Balakirsky will be Deputy Editor of MediaFile, effective at the conclusion of the 2016-2017 academic year. Julia and Talia will assume editorial leadership of MediaFile and work with a new team of news editors and business personnel to run the publication day-to-day. Julia will also join the board of directors of MediaFile Publishing, Inc., MediaFile’s nonprofit parent body.

Editor-in-Chief Scott Nover and Deputy Editor Clare Hymes sent the following memo to staff on Sunday night:

Dearest MediaFile Team,

It’s our immense pleasure to inform you that Julia Arciga will be the Editor-in-Chief of MediaFile for 2017-2018! Julia brings exceptional passion, knowledge, and thoughtfulness to the job and we know she’ll be an amazing leader for this still-nascent, yet growing, news organization. As many of you know, Julia came to MediaFile as an international reporter last August and quickly assumed the role of Politics Editor when our original editor had to depart the team unexpectedly. Julia immediately stepped up to the challenge and ran a large and busy politics section through a tumultuous fall and uncertain winter. Originally from California, Julia brings experience from interning with CNN’s The Situation Room, NBC’s Today Show, Conflict News, DCInno, Radio America. We have full faith in Julia’s ability to lead MediaFile over the next 12 months.

We are also thrilled to announce that Talia Balakirsky will be serving as Deputy Editor of MediaFile! Talia brings a professional, hardworking, and dedicated passion to the Deputy Editor job, having run the opinions section with a kind of independence and maturity beyond her years. Originally from New Jersey, Talia brings reporting and writing experience from her time at Philadelphia Magazine, the GW Undergraduate Law Review, and The GW Hatchet.

We could not be more thrilled to announce that Julia and Talia are stepping into these roles, and taking on an immense opportunity leading MediaFile through it’s second year.

But, please join us in congratulating Julia and Talia and wishing them well as we begin a transition that will take effect following the conclusion of the semester!

With sincere regards,
Scott and Clare
